Quality
Systems' MicroMed Division to Launch NextMD.com
Health Portal to Provide Patients with Health Content and
Tools via Internet
HORSHAM,
Pa. Co-branded Interface with Physicians' Office Systems
to Enhance Doctor-Patient Communication, Physician Practice Efficiency.
Quality
Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:QSII - news) announced today that its MicroMed
Healthcare Information Systems division will launch an Internet-based
consumer health portal, NextMD.com.
NextMD.com,
targeted for launch in late April 2000, will be a vertical portal
for the healthcare industry, linking patients with their physicians,
insurers, laboratories and online pharmacies, while providing
a centralized source of health-oriented information for both consumers
and medical professionals.
Planned
features include health articles and news that will be updated
daily, health reference libraries, a healthcare-oriented Internet
search engine, polls and surveys on health questions, links to
numerous health sites, health calculators, and a number of unique
features designed to revolutionize communications between patients
and their doctors. Nearly all features will be free of charge
to both patients and physicians.
Patients
whose physicians are linked to the portal will be able to request
appointments, send appointment changes or cancellations, receive
test results online, request prescription refills, view and/or
pay their statements, and communicate with their physicians, all
in a secure, online environment. MicroMed's NextGen suite of information
systems will be linked to NextMD.com, integrating a number of
these features with physicians' existing systems.
"We
believe that NextMD.com will be an invaluable tool for patients
to actively manage their own health and healthcare delivery, while
enhancing the physician's ability to manage their practices more
effectively and to enrich the doctor-patient relationship," said
Patrick Cline, MicroMed's President. "It's estimated that
over 100 million people searched the Internet for health information
during the last year, and most consumers say they would like to
be more involved with the care process and communicate more effectively
with their doctors. Physicians are looking for solutions that
will increase efficiency, reduce costs and improve quality. NextMD.com
will allow the physician to harness the Internet's power of real-time,
rules-based interaction to enhance the quality of the doctor-patient
relationship, reduce clerical errors and make medical practices
more efficient."
MicroMed,
which is the result of a combination of Clinitec International,
Inc. and MicroMed Healthcare Information Systems, Inc., offers
a modular suite of state-of-the-art information systems for physicians
known as NextGen. The NextGen suite includes NextGen EMR, MicroMed's
Electronic Medical Records System, and NextGen EPM, MicroMed's
Enterprise Practice Management System.
NextMD.com
will also be able to communicate with a number of other vendors
practice management systems, including systems from Medical Manager
(Nasdaq:MMGR - news), IDX Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:IDXC - news),
Infocure Corp. (Nasdaq:INCX - news), PCN, MEDIC and others, as
well as Quality Systems' other practice management products.
MicroMed
intends to "co-brand" the portal site with a number of large
medical practices and networks of physicians. When a patient links
to NextMD.com from a physician or hospital Web site, the portal
can display information about that entity, and provide return
links.
Brad
Block, Chief Information Officer of Doylestown Hospital, one of
the first MicroMed customers to integrate its systems with the
NextMD.com portal, said, "Many of our physicians say their patients
are interested in communicating with them using the Internet.
These patients also want to obtain accurate and timely healthcare
information. Given the rich functionality, reliability and state-of-the-art
security for which MicroMed's products are known, we are excited
about the positive impact NextMD will have on our practices and
on the community."
The
Company also announced that it has executed a number of agreements
with organizations that will provide third-party content and/or
features for NextMD.com, including Clinical Reference Systems,
Medical Data Exchange, Health24News, Onhealth.com (Nasdaq:ONHN
- news), Aeneid, and others.
